‘True Grit,’ movie review

The widely anticipated release of Joel and Ethan Coen’s True Grit opens today at theaters nationwide. Not considered, by the Coen brothers anyway, to be a remake of the 1969 version featuring John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Kim Darby, it purports to remain more faithful to the 1968 novel of the same name by Charles Portis. Since almost everyone in the free world is at least somewhat familiar with the storyline (14 year old...

‘Inception,’ movie review

The long awaited, much hyped, latest effort from The Dark Knight director, Christopher Nolan, hit screens across America at midnight this morning. Inception is an incredibly fun film driven by an off the edge of reality story line and physics bending special effects (see here for official movie site). Having already been described as “Amazing,” “Mind blowing,” and “Astounding,” by Peter Hammond, Peter Travers and Mark Istook, respectively, it seemed there might be nowhere...

‘Casino Jack and the United States of Money’ [video]

Probably the best movie of 2010 that you’ve never heard anything about. Perhaps a further explanation as to why things are as they are seen in this account of super-lobbyist, Jack Abramoff.

When movies and music mesh

When movies and music mesh

Ideally the score of a film should enhance the images on the screen. This isn’t always the case. I was watching A Few Good Men the other night and my son agreed the music was often cheesy and not appropriate for the visuals. At some points I expected Tubbs and Crockett to come walking through the scene. Though there are certainly many movies with outstanding scores (not “soundtracks”), three that always come to mind...

‘Alice in Wonderland,’ movie review

Opening in theaters today is the latest from the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp tandem, Alice in Wonderland, or as she’s reminded in the movie, “Underland.” Based on the Lewis Carroll books, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, the story takes place 13 years after Alice’s first trip through the rabbit hole. Alice (Mia Wasikowska, Amelia) is set to be wed to a sniveling, digestively challenged Lord Hamish Ascot (Leo Bill). The reappearance of...

‘Shutter Island,’ movie review

Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island based on the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) opened today. A creepy, dark (not to mention windy and rainy) adaptation of an exceptionally good novel, the 2+ hour faithful rendering will be a surprising movie to those who have not read the book but might be underwhelming to those who have. Oscar-nominated Leonardo DiCaprio (Blood Diamond, The Departed) plays U. S. Marshal...

‘Sherlock Holmes,’ movie review

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuth gets a more than elementary treatment in the new Guy Ritchie film, Sherlock Holmes, featuring Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes, Jude Law as his longsuffering (in more ways than one) sidekick, Dr. John Watson, Rachel McAdams as Holmes’ love interest/nemesis Irene Adler and Chris Strong as the villain Lord Blackwood. Suffice it to say though Holmes still has a predilection toward disguises, making loads of complex deductions from...

‘Avatar,’ movie review

The long awaited James Cameron (Titanic) CGI fest, Avatar, has hit a screen near you. Boasting a new generation of effects, the film, 5 years in the making, cost a reported half-billion dollars to make and features live action along with the special effects extravaganza. Moviegoers looking for deep meaning will likely be disappointed; this story has been told a thousand times in a hundred ways: underdogs win the day. Sam Worthington plays Jake...

Blindsided by ‘The Blind Side’

Blindsided by ‘The Blind Side’

As a rule, I do not go to a theater to see a sports movie. Still have not seen Glory Road or We Are Marshall and I’m sure I did not see Remember the Titans until it was sitting on the shelf at Blockbuster. So, even though I thought the new Sandra Bullock film, The Blind Side, looked promising I was willing to wait. Thankfully, my daughter, aged 13 and no fan of football,...

‘The Road,’ movie review

The Road, opening November 25, is the film adaptation of the Pulitzer prize winning novel of the same name by southern author, Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men, which also won a Pulitzer). Set in the United States, post-an unnamed apocalypse, The Road is the story of The Man (Viggo Mortensen, LOTR trilogy, A Brief History of Violence) and The Boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who are surviving moment by moment with a goal of...
