Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Winter 2010 concert review

As part of my son’s Christmas gift this year, he and I attended the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Winter 2010 concert in Duluth, GA, last evening. (Okay, I was not part of the gift; I was just the driver.) We started off the night by forgetting the tickets. Thankfully, owing to an early start and a helpful spouse, we did not lose too much time and still made it to the arena in plenty of time....

30 Seconds to Mars, ‘Closer to the Edge,’ HD video

Jared Leto is likely best know to adults for his role in the underground classic, Fight Club, alongside Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. He was also in Girl, Interrupted, with Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder, as well as American Psycho, Alexander, and Lord of War,. To a swelling number of kids worldwide, though, he is better known as the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter for a band called Thirty Seconds to Mars,...

Jennifer Knapp on Larry King live (video)

April 24, 2010

Last night on Larry King Live, recording artist Jennifer Knapp discussed her recent coming out as a lesbian. This likely would have made about as big a splash as Wanda Sykes recent announcement, which is to say almost none, except that Knapp was for several years, before taking a five year hiatus, an artist in the Christian music industry. The above clip was the longest that could be found this soon and, apparently, is...

When movies and music mesh

Ideally the score of a film should enhance the images on the screen. This isn’t always the case. I was watching A Few Good Men the other night and my son agreed the music was often cheesy and not appropriate for the visuals. At some points I expected Tubbs and Crockett to come walking through the scene. Though there are certainly many movies with outstanding scores (not “soundtracks”), three that always come to mind...

Remembering Rich Mullins

No one in music has impacted my life like Rich Mullins. Very few people that I’ve ever met have impacted me as much in any way and I never so much as spoke a word or shook his hand. But his songs. His music. His life. With others I have sung a chorus written by his friend Beaker (David Strasser), “Oh God, you are my God and I will ever praise you and I...

A couple of music videos for your enjoyment

I think I first heard this on a Jaguar commercial a few years back. This is History Repeating by Propellorhead w/Dame Shirley Bassey. Purchase History Repeating on This song was used on an L.L. Bean commercial a couple of years ago. This is a fan video but looks almost good enough to be the real thing–Fountains of Wayne’s Valley Winter Song. Warning: This song is habit forming. Purchase Valley Winter Song on

At the Acoustic House Show, concert review

In the great tradition of indie music small venues like coffee shops, bars and homes are the trade specialty. Last night I have the opportunity to enjoy an acoustic show at the home of Eric and CJ Burk of Buford, GA. Headlined by American Standard, Damion Suomi, Lauris Vidal and Andy Zipf with opener, Jordan Burk, those in attendance were treated to about three hours of music, food and fun. It was the second...

‘Hello Hurricane,’ CD Review

Hello Hurricane is the most recent release from Switchfoot, a group whose music spans genres and whose fans span generations. Those fans will not be disappointed. Little new ground is broken here, but the ground covered is covered very well. ‘Hello Hurricane,’ also featured on the recent Blackberry Storm 2 television commercial, is one of the few unapologetically Christian bands to have successfully broken into the mainstream music scene and seen critical success there....
