Tim Tebow is the best selling religion author of 2011: What does it mean?

USA Today has reported that quarterback Tim Tebow is the top selling religion author of 2011. From the article: Tebow’s Christian life story, Through My Eyes, has become the top-selling new release of 2011 from HarperOne, a leading religion book publisher. With 220,000 copies sold since its June launch, Through My Eyes has even outsold Rob Bell’s best-seller Love Wins, which sparked intense debate with its unorthodox views about hell. To Rob Bell’s disappointment,...

Book recommendations for Christmas

In twenty years as a pastor I was regularly asked about books recommendations. “What can I get for my son who want to know about Bible history?” “How can I know more theology?” “Can you recommend a good devotional guide?” I heard these questions, and others like them, dozens of times. The short answer is, “Unless you are reading and meditating on the Bible, getting other books is the wrong order of things.” The...

30 Seconds to Mars, ‘Closer to the Edge,’ HD video

Jared Leto is likely best know to adults for his role in the underground classic, Fight Club, alongside Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. He was also in Girl, Interrupted, with Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder, as well as American Psycho, Alexander, and Lord of War,. To a swelling number of kids worldwide, though, he is better known as the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter for a band called Thirty Seconds to Mars,...

‘The Generous Soul: An Introduction to Missional Giving,’ available for pre-order now

I am happy to announce the pre-release availability of my second book, The Generous Soul: An Introduction to Missional Giving. The back cover description: Christians are inundated with books, messages, and larger-than-life personalities all positioned as experts on God’s will regarding finances. Countering the health-and-wealth attitude are those who abhor any suggestion of financial well-being arguing instead for a life of poverty, and the middle ground is dominated by financially passive churchgoers with little...

‘Flirting with Faith,’ book review

At my wife’s suggestion, I recently read her copy of Flirting with Faith: My Spiritual Journey from Atheism to a Faith-Filled Life. Written by professor Joan Ball, it is the engaging, humorous and revealing story of how an affirmed atheist with no problems to speak of, searching for nothing and experience no spiritual doubts, was smacked down “Paul on the road to Damascus style” and, to paraphrase C.S. Lewis, became the most surprised convert...

Manute Bol the radical Christian

I was shocked to hear of the death of former NBA center, Manute Bol. Bol, who at 7′ 7″ towered over all but the tallest of NBA big men, died at the age of 47, the result of a disease contracted in his home country of Sudan. Recently, Jon Shields of the Wall Street Journal, authored an article entitled, “Manute Bol’s radical Christianity,” which explored the embarrassingly overused concept of redemption as it is...

Jennifer Knapp on Larry King live (video)

April 24, 2010

Last night on Larry King Live, recording artist Jennifer Knapp discussed her recent coming out as a lesbian. This likely would have made about as big a splash as Wanda Sykes recent announcement, which is to say almost none, except that Knapp was for several years, before taking a five year hiatus, an artist in the Christian music industry. The above clip was the longest that could be found this soon and, apparently, is...

Poet Chris Tse, author of ‘I’m Sorry I’m a Christian,’ interviewed at patheos.com

Last week’s posting of Chris Tse’s poem, “I’m Sorry I’m a Christian,” resulted in a lively debate both here and elsewhere. “Chris Tse” was highly searched topic and this site is still getting traffic from those seeking out Chris’ poem. Timothy Dalrymple at patheos.com was able to conduct an interview with Chris recently about the poem and the massive interest that it stirrred. I’m including one question and response below, then a link to...

Chris Tse poem: I’m sorry I’m a Christian

March 23, 2010
By

A college aged friend of ours, Jordan Burk, sent this to my son and then to me. It’s from a “Poetry Slam” in Vancouver, BC, in December 2009. The young man’s name is Chris Tse and his poem is entitled, “I’m Sorry I’m A Christian.” It’s worth your four minutes whether you are a believer or not. The primary reason I’m posting this is because a good many older believers are having an hard...

Malaysian government disallows use of ‘Allah’ by Christians

The court and government of Malaysia are at odds over the use of the word “Allah” by non-Muslims, specifically the Roman Catholic Church. Four churches have been attacked with varying degrees of success and numerous automobiles bearing Christian symbols have been vandalized. The government had recently banned the Roman Catholic newsletter, The Herald, from using referring to God as Allah, but that ruling was overturned by the country’s high court. The government appealed which...
